Welcome to TY: Facilitating the Portfolio Development Component. This short course has four lessons of about 30 minutes. You know your TY programme; this course is about the class the TY Programme Statement gives every TY group each week to develop their TY portfolio, and how to guide each student's portfolio from their first goals to their end-of-year reflection testimony.
In this first lesson you rate your confidence, see where the TY portfolio and the Portfolio Development component sit in the Statement and the NCCA's guidance, and study a portfolio year planner for an invented school. Then you note your own school's portfolio year.
Each lesson links the Word templates it uses from this course's toolkit, yours to download, edit and use with your students. Your survey, reflections and feedback across the four lessons compile into a downloadable Professional Learning Portfolio when you finish.
Before the presentation, rate your confidence on the five areas this course develops. There are no right answers. You will rate the same five statements at the end of the course, so you can compare each rating with your first.
Watch this presentation on the TY portfolio and the Portfolio Development component: the three elements to reporting in TY, the purpose of a portfolio, the four Student Dimensions, Portfolio Development in Table 3 and the NCCA's guidance, each student's own portfolio, the essential elements, and the key points of a TY year.
Study this portfolio year planner, filled in for an invented school's TY year. Read the notes on each choice.
Download the blank planner to use for your own school: Portfolio year planner (Word).
Use the planner you have just studied to start your own school's portfolio year. Download the blank planner if you want it beside you: Portfolio year planner (Word). On screen, answer one question. It saves to your Professional Learning Portfolio as My School's Portfolio Year.
In this lesson you set a confidence baseline and placed the TY portfolio and the Portfolio Development component in the TY Programme Statement and the NCCA's guidance.
| Key idea | Why it matters for your teaching | Classroom application |
|---|---|---|
| One of three elements to reporting | The student's TY portfolio sits beside student reflection and school reporting, and its purpose is reflective and critical thinking across the four Student Dimensions | Share the purpose with students in the Statement's words in the first week |
| One class per week | Portfolio Development supports students in developing their TY portfolio over the year; each student should create and develop their own, digital and/or physical | Agree with your TY Coordinator who teaches it, and which of your school's own tools students can use |
| Key points | Critical reflections come at key points the teachers decide with the TY coordinator and/or TY Core Team, and at the programme's end | Put your key points on the Portfolio year planner (Word) before the year starts |
Next: goal setting and the ongoing review of goals, and the chronological review of student experiences.
Enrol to take the whole course. Your work is saved as you go, and you get a certificate when you finish.
