The Investigation as It Runs Now

This lesson sets out how the Chemistry in Practice Investigation runs this year: its weighting and marks, the 2027 brief and its completion date, and the six stages with the guidelines' indicative times. You rate your confidence at the start of the course, study a class planner built back from the completion date, and note your class's next date.

1 - Overview ~2 mins

Welcome to LC Chemistry: Running the Chemistry in Practice Investigation. This short course has six lessons of about 25 minutes. You know your chemistry; this course is about running the investigation with a whole class, from the brief to the signed Authentication Form P.2.

In this first lesson you rate your confidence, see how the investigation runs this year, and study a class planner built back from the completion date. Then you note your class's next date. Your survey, reflections and plan across the six lessons compile into a downloadable Professional Learning Portfolio when you finish.

2 - Pre-course Confidence Audit ~4 mins

Before the presentation, rate your confidence on the five areas this course develops. There are no right answers. You will rate the same five statements at the end of the course, so you can compare each rating with your first.

3 - Understanding the Investigation as It Runs Now ~6 mins

Watch this presentation on the Chemistry in Practice Investigation as it runs now: the two assessment components, the 2027 brief and its completion date, the six stages and their hours, and planning back from the completion date.

4 - An Investigation Class Planner, Annotated ~7 mins

Study this class planner, filled in for an invented sixth-year class working to the 2027 brief and planned back from the completion date. Read the notes on each choice.

Download the blank planner to use with your own class: Investigation class planner (Word).

5 - Your Class's Next Date ~4 mins

Use the planner you have just studied to start a plan for your own class. Download the blank template if you want the full planner beside you: Investigation class planner (Word). On screen, answer one question. It saves to your Professional Learning Portfolio as My Class's Next Date.

6 - Key Takeaways ~2 mins

In this lesson you set a confidence baseline and mapped how the investigation runs this year.

Key ideaWhy it matters for your teachingClassroom application
The 2027 brief: 200 marks, 40% of Leaving Certificate Chemistry, on chemical reactions and the factors used to control their rateThe coursework must be carried out and submitted to the class teacher by Friday 23 April 2027, and schools cannot extend that datePut the date at the top of your class planner and plan back from it
Six stages, approximately 20 hoursThe guidelines give an indicative time for each stage; the stages need not run in one continuous blockStart your class at the stage they have reached, and keep up to 4 hours for the final stage
The experiment under your supervisionThe experiment and the gathering of its primary data are fully completed under the Chemistry teacher's direct supervisionOur suggestion: book the laboratory for the experiment sessions early, and note the dates in the Investigation class planner (Word)

Next: Stage 1 and Stage 2, the 2027 topic word for word, the guidelines' prompt questions and the investigative log.
