    1 - Welcome

Warm-up (30 seconds): Think about your Numbers Sheet from last lesson. What would a chart help you see more clearly about your Something Real project?

Recap: Last lesson you built a Numbers Sheet (budget, timeline, survey, or inventory) with SUM, AVERAGE, or other formulas. Today you'll turn those numbers into a chart that helps you make a decision.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Generate a chart from spreadsheet data
    • Create and position a bar chart that visualises project costs
    • Choose appropriate chart type for the data and message
    • Prepare charts suitable for inclusion in presentations
    • Use charts like event managers and small businesses do to control costs and make decisions

Portfolio Build: Create one decision-changing chart from your Numbers Sheet and write: 'The chart shows X, so I'm going to Y.'

    2 - Key Concepts

    What makes a good chart?

    • Has a clear message: One thing it shows immediately (e.g. 'venue hire is our biggest cost')
    • Right type: Bar charts compare amounts between items. Line charts show change over time.
    • Easy to read: Clear labels, readable colours, title that says what it shows
    • Does work: Changes a decision (don't chart just to make it pretty)

    Why bar charts?

Perfect for project budgets — immediately shows which items cost most (e.g. '€500 coach hire vs €80 snacks'). The tallest bar = biggest cost.

    Common Issues

    • Chart looks weird: You selected the wrong range — include headers + all data
    • No data shows: Check your data range includes numbers, not blank cells
    • Can't move chart: Click the chart edge (not inside bars) to see move/resize handles

    3 - Step-by-step: Sample Fundraiser Budget Chart

Follow these instructions to create a bar chart from sample event budget data. This teaches you the steps you'll apply to your own Numbers Sheet next.

4 - Portfolio Build: Chart Your Numbers Sheet

Your Something Real: Open your Lesson 6 Numbers Sheet from your Digital Portfolio. Create a bar chart that changes a decision.

How to add your decision sentence:
    1. Click any empty cell below your chart (like D15)
    2. Type: 'The chart shows X, so I'm going to Y.'
    3. Click the cell again, then click {{btn:Bold}} button (B icon) to make it stand out
Quick tips for your own data:
    • Open your Numbers Sheet and identify the two columns that show a comparison (e.g. Item/Category and Amount/Score/Time)
    • Select only those columns including the header row (like A1:B6 in the sample)

    Success criteria:

    • Chart made from your actual project data
    • Clear title that says what it shows
    • Decision sentence in bold below chart
    • Saved in Digital Portfolio folder
