Video transcript: Types of lessons Teacher led Teacher leads the students through the lesson step by step. Student led Teacher provides the students with the step by step instructions which they follow independently. Hybrid The teacher allows students to move ahead at their own pace but also goes through the lesson step by step for thse who wish to follow. Group discussions/activities This is a group format where the whole class or smaller groups will have a discussion or will work on an activity. Prepare the lesson Preparing for a coding lesson this might involve: Going through the steps of the lesson. Programming the lesson yourself. Printing any handouts that may be required. Choosing points in the lesson where you might pose questions to the kids. Introduce the lesson Give the students an overview of the lesson, the concepts covered and what the goals are. This frames the lesson and gives the students an opportunity to consider what they will be coding and ask any questions that they may have. Lead the lesson (Teacher Led) Using a large display and your own computer, take the students through each step by creating the code. This demonstrates to the students how the code is created and also gives you an opportunity to pause and explain a particular step or concept. Give out online/printed lesson (Student led) Give out the lesson to the students Either online version or printed version Students work through the lesson themselves Teacher can also lead the lesson for the class and let students work ahead if they’re able Test often! Test periodically as they are coding See the effect their code is having Spot any errors and fix them Errors are an opportunity for learning Need to follow their code to the point where the error is occurring Fix the code Run and verify that it’s fixed Save often! Students should be prompted to save their work regularly. This is a good habit that students should get into so that when the unforeseen happens they don't lose all their work. Explore! Time permitting and if a student has successfully completed all the steps in a lesson, ask them how they would improve or change the project. This allows students to get creative and improve the project using their own ideas. They will need to think about what new code they'll need to add and where in the program to add it.
