Scratchjr: a Sequence with a Repeat

Pupils explore repeating patterns in dances and apply the idea in ScratchJr by building a sequence with a repeat block. They plan their actions first, test the program and explain the effect of the repeat.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedThink of a dance you know — hop, hop, hop, clap. Which part happens again and again?

    Key point

Today we will put that same idea into ScratchJr with a special block called a repeat.

    2 - Today's Coding Word ~3 mins

Our star word today is repeat block.

    Key point

A repeat block runs an action a set number of times. The number on the block tells it how many.

We will also test: run the program and watch what happens.

3 - Watch the Repeat Block ~6 mins

Watch the board. We will build a short hop sequence, then put the hop block inside a repeat block. Predict: how many times will the character hop?

Then we will try a turn inside a repeat too, so you can choose hop or turn later.

4 - Plan Our Hop or Turn ~4 mins

Sit with the partner your teacher names. Tablets stay closed. Choose together: will your character hop or turn? Decide how many times the repeat should run. Say your plan out loud before anyone touches the tablet.

5 - Build and Test with a Repeat ~14 mins

Illustration for Build and test with a repeatWake your open ScratchJr project with your partner. Build and test like this:

    1. Check you have a character on the screen.
    2. Add a start block (green flag).
    3. Add a repeat block and set your number.
    4. Put your hop or turn action inside the repeat.
    5. Press the green flag and count the moves.
    6. If it is wrong, change one thing and test again.
