    1 - Welcome

Warm-up (1 minute): Open your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft. With a partner, read the first paragraph aloud and spot any obvious errors together. How would a spelling mistake affect a decision-maker reading your proposal?

This lesson teaches you to use your word processor's built-in spell-check and grammar tools to produce error-free documents suitable for emailing to teachers, parents, or project sponsors.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Proof and edit a document before printing (LCA ICT curriculum, word processing module)
    • Use built-in spelling and grammar tools while understanding their limitations
    • Perform careful human proofing and peer review
    • Produce error-free documents suitable for emailing to named recipients or real audiences

Portfolio Build: Turn your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft into a proofread **Polished Proposal v3** ready to email to a decision-maker.

    2 - Key Concepts

    Why Proofing Matters

Spelling and grammar errors make even good ideas look unprofessional. Automated tools catch obvious mistakes but miss context, uncommon Irish-language terms, or project-specific terms like your Something Real name.

    The Proofing Process

    1. Automated check: Run spell-check and grammar tools
    2. Human review: Read every sentence aloud — your ear catches what your eye misses
    3. Peer review: Fresh eyes spot what you can't see
    4. Final polish: Check formatting, page numbers, your name/contact

    Tool Limitations

    • May not recognize uncommon Irish-language terms, project-specific acronyms, or rare proper nouns (depending on dictionary/language settings)
    • Grammar suggestions can be wrong
    • Always do human proofing after automated tools

    3 - Step-by-step: Run Spell-check on Sample Text

Follow these instructions to run spell-check and grammar tools on sample text with deliberate errors. This teaches you the interface before working on your own Proposal Draft.

    Common Issues

    • Issue: Spell-check marks correct project terms or uncommon words
      Solution: Right-click → {{menu:Add to dictionary}} or {{menu:Ignore}}
    • Issue: Grammar suggestions seem wrong
Solution: Trust your judgement — you're the expert on your project
    • Issue: Can't find spell-check button
Solution: Try {{kbd:F7}} (Windows/Mac) or search 'spelling'

4 - Portfolio Build: Proofread Your Proposal Draft

Open your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft from your Digital Portfolio folder. Run spell-check and grammar tools, then do human proofing. Save as **Polished Proposal v3**.

    Success criteria:

    • ✅ No spelling errors
    • ✅ Grammar suggestions reviewed (not just auto-accepted)
    • ✅ Read aloud — sounds professional
    • ✅ Project terms/proper nouns correct
    • ✅ Saved as {{code:Polished-Proposal-v3.docx}} in Digital Portfolio
