    1 - Access Word Online

OK, you have your Microsoft account set up, you created a new document in the last lesson.

In this lesson we will start to learn the skills needed for Microsoft Word.

Open the document that you created in the last lesson, titled, "School Disco Poster" and we will start creating your fun poster.

    Start Typing

    1. Click into your word document and type some details about your school poster, it's location, theme. Just a line or two.

    2 - Explore the Ribbon

The Ribbon is like a digital toolbox. It's located at the top of your Word window and contains different tabs and groups of tools.

Each tab represents a specific category of tools, making it easy to find what you need.

    1. Let's start with the "Home" tab. Click on it, and you'll see various tools for formatting text.
    2. Try selecting some text in your document and use the tools in the "Home" tab to change the font style, size, and alignment. Don't worry about getting your poster to look good. This is just practice to learn about the ribbon and Word's interface.
    3. Click on the "Insert" tab to find tools for adding pictures, tables, and other elements.
    4. Check out the "Layout" tab for adjusting page settings, like margins and orientation.
    5. Click on the "Layout" tab. The "Page Layout" tab helps you control how your document looks on the page, like margins, page orientation, and themes.
    6. Use the "Margins" tool to change the margin size of your document.
    7. Experiment with the "Orientation" tool to switch between portrait and landscape modes.
    8. In "Layout" you can experiment with changing the size or even the "page colour".
    9. To remove any new changes you can press "Ctrl+Z" on your keyboard and this will bring your work back to the previous step.
    10. In this lesson's video "Ctrl+Z" was pressed several times until we undid all the work.

Spend at least 5 minuets to explore the ribbon at the top of the screen. You'll find various tabs like Home, Insert, Design, Layout, and more. Each tab contains a set of tools and options that you'll use to create your poster.

    3 - Add a Title

Now that you are becoming familiar with the interface of Microsoft work it's time to start creating your poster.

    1. Click into your Word document.
    2. Type 'School Disco' at the top of your document and select the text. (Pressing down the left click on your mouse and dragging it over the text.)
    3. Use the tools in the 'Font' group to choose a font style, size, and color for your title.

    4 - Insert an Image

How about an image for your poster. What kind of image/picture would your school disco poster viewers would like to see? A picture of a staffroom? No! Maybe a disco ball, or a part scene.

    Image copyright

Before you start searching for images, it's essential to know about copyright. Copyright protects creators' work. Using someone's image without permission could get you into trouble. That's why we look for free images. You will learn more about this in the "Image Insertion" lesson.

    Insert the image

    1. Right click on the disco ball image in this step and save it to your device.
    2. Click on the 'Insert' tab and select 'Pictures.'
    3. Choose the image you saved and insert it into your document.
    4. Resize and position the image as desired.
