    1 - Welcome

Warm-up (30 seconds): Open your Digital Portfolio from Lesson 4 (Proposal Draft). Does it look ready to print and hand to a teacher or principal? What would make it look more professional?

This lesson teaches you how to control page layout — margins, orientation, headers, footers, and page numbers — to make your documents look polished and professional.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Set margins, orientation, headers, footers and page numbers
    • Control how your document will appear when printed or shared as PDF
    • Upgrade your Proposal Draft into a professional-looking document

    2 - Key Concepts

    Why page layout matters

Professional documents have consistent margins (e.g. 2 cm all sides, or per your school's template), your name and project title in the header, page numbers in the footer, and the right orientation (Portrait for letters, Landscape for tables).

    • Margins: Space around your text (top, bottom, left, right)
    • Orientation: Portrait (tall) or Landscape (wide) — applies to whole document
    • Header: Text that appears at the top of every page
    • Footer: Text that appears at the bottom of every page

Portfolio Goal: Transform your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft into 'Polished Proposal v2' with professional layout.

3 - Step-by-step: Practice Layout on Sample Text

Follow these steps to practice margins, orientation, headers and footers using sample text. This builds your confidence before upgrading your real Proposal Draft.

Success criteria: Your practice document has consistent margins (e.g. 2 cm all sides, or per your school's template), landscape orientation, header with your name, footer with page numbers.

    4 - Portfolio Build: Polished Proposal V2

Your Digital Portfolio artifact: Upgrade your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft to 'Polished Proposal v2' with professional layout.

    1. Open your Lesson 4 Proposal Draft from your Digital Portfolio folder
    2. Apply what you just learned: set consistent margins (e.g. 2 cm all sides, or per your school's template), add header with your name and project title, add page numbers in footer
    3. Switch to Landscape orientation if you have wide tables/content, Portrait otherwise
    4. Check Print Preview ({{menu:File -> Print}}) to see how it will look printed
    5. Save as {{code:Polished-Proposal-v2.docx}} (and PDF) in your Digital Portfolio folder

Success criteria: Document has consistent professional layout, prints cleanly on A4, shows your name and page numbers.

    Common Issues

    • Header/footer won't edit: Double-click exactly in the top/bottom margin area
    • Page numbers start at 0: Check page number settings include 'Start at 1'
    • Margins look wrong in Print Preview: Your printer default might override — use Custom Margins
