    1 - Welcome & Warm-up

Warm-up (30 seconds): Look at your polished photo from your Digital Portfolio. What one element could you pull into a promotional flyer to grab attention?

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Create a promotional document that effectively communicates using graphics, text and images
    • Design for a real platform (Instagram carousel, poster, flyer, TikTok thumbnail)
    • Combine text, edited image, chart and graphics with strong audience awareness
    • Produce vocational promotional material ready for publication

Portfolio Build: Complete 08_ka3_promotional_document — your final promotional piece combining content from your Digital Portfolio.

    2 - Key Design Principles

    Promotional Design Rules

    • One Big Idea: What's the single message someone should remember? Everything else supports this core message.
    • Visual Hierarchy: Biggest = most important. Use size, colour, position to guide the eye through your message in 3 seconds.
    • 3-Second Rule: Can someone scrolling Instagram understand it in 3 seconds? Test by looking away for 5 seconds, then back.
    • Your Audience: TY students? Parents? Teachers? Match the tone and style.

    Required Elements for KA3:

    • 1 edited image (from your Digital Portfolio or new)
    • 1 chart (from your project numbers spreadsheet)
    • 3 graphics/shapes/icons
    • Clear headline + 2-3 short lines of text
    • Call to action (RSVP, sign up, etc.)

    3 - Step-by-step: Sample Flyer

Follow these steps to build a sample promotional flyer for a 'Galway TY Trip'. We choose landscape orientation and narrow margins for this wide-format sample flyer (suitable for certain digital displays, posters or print).

4 - Portfolio Build: Your Promotional Document

Success Criteria: Your 08_ka3_promotional_document must include:

    • Title: Clear headline about your Something Real (48pt+)
    • Image: Edited photo relevant to your project (crop + adjust brightness like sample)
    • Chart: Copied from your project numbers spreadsheet
    • 3 Graphics: Shapes/icons with project info (price, date, RSVP, etc.)
    • Call to Action: What should people do next?
    • Audience Fit: Matches Instagram/poster/TikTok format

File Naming: Save as 08_ka3_promotional_document.docx (or .gdoc) in your Digital Portfolio folder.

    Common Issues

    • Issue: Chart won't copy/paste
Solution: Click chart border first. Paste with {{kbd:Ctrl+V}}; choose unlinked option in dialog (Docs) or use {{menu:Insert -> Chart -> From Sheets}}.
    • Issue: Too crowded
Solution: Delete half your text. Bigger fonts. More white space.
    • Issue: Image blurry
Solution: High-quality source. Resize by corners only.
