    1 - Welcome

Warm-up (30 seconds): Think about the Something Real project from your Digital Portfolio. What one image or idea would grab attention if you were pitching it to the principal or your parents?

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Use presentation software to create an effective presentation
    • Choose the right tool (PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Canva) for your project
    • Create a title slide and plan your pitch deck structure
    • Understand when modern creator tools work better than traditional software

This lesson starts your 5-slide pitch deck for Lesson 8. You'll create the title slide and plan the rest today.

    2 - Key Concepts

    Why presentations matter

Your pitch deck turns your Digital Portfolio into a visual story that gets adults excited about your Something Real. Good slides have few words, strong images, and clear structure.

    Tool choice guide

    • PowerPoint: Best for complex formatting, animations, offline work. Traditional choice for formal pitches.
    • Google Slides: Perfect for collaboration, easy sharing, works everywhere. Great if you're working in a pair.
    • Canva: Modern creator tool with stunning templates. Fastest way to look professional, especially with images.

Pitch deck structure (5 slides total)

    1. Title: Hook + what it is
    2. Why it matters: Your passion + who benefits
    3. The numbers: Budget/data from Lessons 6-7
    4. The plan: Timeline/next steps
    5. The ask: What you need to make it happen

    3 - Step-by-step: Create Your First Presentation

Follow these instructions to create a sample presentation using the TY Galway Adventure as a worked example. Save it in your Digital Portfolio folder as Practice_Presentation.pptx (PowerPoint - local file) or Practice_Presentation (Google Slides/Canva - cloud save).

PowerPoint: Save locally as .pptx file
    Google Slides: Auto-saves to Drive
Canva: Saves to your Canva account (download as .pptx later)

Example slide plan (write this in Notes pane or Slide 2):
Slide 2 - Explain my passion for Galway and who benefits
Slide 3 - Show budget numbers from Lessons 6-7
Slide 4 - Timeline of when trip happens
Slide 5 - Ask principal for approval + transport help

    Common Issues

    • Can't find New/Blank option: Look for multicoloured + button or 'Blank presentation'
    • Screen looks different: Templates vary — choose any simple design
    • Keyboard shortcut fails: Use menu options instead (File → Save)

4 - Portfolio Build: Start Your Pitch Deck

Now create Slide 1 (Title slide) for YOUR Something Real project. Save as 07_project_pitch in your Digital Portfolio folder.

Where to write your slide plan (follow the same steps you practiced in Step 3):

    • PowerPoint: Click {{btn:Notes}} at bottom to open Notes pane below Slide 1
    • Google Slides: Click {{btn:Notes}} below slide thumbnails to open Notes pane
    • Canva: Click {{btn:Text}} in left sidebar, drag text box style onto Slide 2

    Success criteria:

    • Title slide with project name + tagline
    • Saved in Digital Portfolio as 07_project_pitch
    • Plan written: 1 sentence per remaining 4 slides. Example: "Slide 2 - My passion for this project and who benefits."

Choose your tool: PowerPoint = animations/control. Slides = collaboration. Canva = design speed.
