What Other People See

Reflect on your strengths by building a script for specific answers, collecting feedback from people in different roles, and starting a What Others See portfolio entry that compares their view with your own aptitude and achievement lists.

    1 - Getting Started ~5 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedEight lessons of looking inward: values, aptitudes, achievements, interests. All of it self-reported. Today you leave your own head.

You are reflecting on who you are by checking your lists against what real people say you are good at. The interesting part is never the agreement. It is the strength they named that you never listed, and the one you claim that nobody else mentioned.

If an Aptitudes, Achievements or Interests document is missing, jot three quick bullets from memory for that list today and flag it for catch-up. You still run the external check.

    2 - Key Terms ~5 mins

Three terms you will use for the rest of this lesson. Read them once, then keep them in mind when you write your asking script.

TermWhat it means for youReal example
External feedbackWhat other people say you are good at from times they have actually seen you. It is the evidence you will collect and set against your own lists.A part-time supervisor naming how you handle a busy counter without being asked
Blind spotA strength others see that you never claimed, or a claim you make that nobody else can evidence. The two gaps in your portfolio entry are blind spots; they matter more than the matches. You never listed calm under pressure; three people name it first
Asking scriptShort prepared questions that force a specific answer instead of vague praise. You will build one with the class, then use it with your three people."Think of a time I was useful to you. What was I doing?" instead of "What am I good at?"

3 - Build the Asking Script ~12 mins

The class builds one asking script together on the board. A line only goes on when it would get a specific answer, not "you're sound". Copy the finished shape into your notes.

This script is the tool for the next step. It is not the portfolio piece yet.

An asking script that gets usable answers

4 - Start What Others See ~23 mins

The board script is not the portfolio piece. What Others See is.

Create (or open) a document called your **What Others See** document (Strand 1.1) in your Strand 1.1 folder in your Digital Portfolio. Use these headings:

    • Three people (role or first name only)
    • What they said (their words as far as you can)
    • Set against my Aptitudes / Achievements / Interests
    • Two gaps
    • One surprise sentence

    Then do the real work:

    1. Name three people in different roles: a teacher, someone you work or train with, and someone at home (role or first name only is enough).
    2. Use the class script. Your teacher will say who in the building you may ask in this period and whether you can step out for two minutes. Asks run a few students at a time, not the whole room at once. If you cannot reach someone now, record the ask you will finish tonight and still write with whatever answers you have.
    3. Write what each person said under What they said.
    4. Open your Aptitudes, Achievements and Interests documents (or your memory bullets from the start of the lesson). Start setting the external answers against those lists.
    5. Draft the two gaps: what they saw that you had not claimed, and what you claim that none of them named so far. Add a surprise sentence when you have enough to go on; finalise it once all three answers are in.

Minimum before you leave today: three named roles, at least two recorded answers, and draft gaps under the headings above. Finish any remaining ask (including home) tonight so the document is complete before Lesson 13.

This Digital Portfolio entry is evidence of how other people see your strengths. You will draw on it for the self-assessment and personal statement later in this strand, and it can feed Portfolio in Action.

    What Others See: document checklist

    5 - Think About It ~10 mins

Talk these through with the person beside you, or sit with them quietly on your own. Use the answers you have so far; you do not need a finished home ask to think well.

    • If you already have draft gaps: from the answers you have so far, which gap is already showing, or what do you expect might surprise you once the remaining ask is in? What does that tell you about how you see yourself?
    • If you only have one or two answers: what made the ask hard, and which script line will you change before you ask again tonight?
    • If an answer was only vague praise, what would you change in the script before you ask that person again?

When the document is complete, you can add two lines under your gaps in your **What Others See** document (Strand 1.1) on which surprise you are taking into next lesson's self-assessment. Keep that writing in the document, not on this page.
