In this lesson you are participating in building a real map of volunteering within reach of this room. The obstacle is often not motivation. It is not knowing what exists nearby. Somebody's sister coaches the under-12s. Somebody stewards on Sundays. Somebody's neighbour runs a foodbank collection. Today the class turns that scattered knowledge into one shared list, then you shortlist three roles you could actually take up.
Three terms you will use while you build the class list and your own shortlist.
| Term | What it means for you | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| Volunteer role | A specific unpaid commitment with a clear task and expected hours. Your shortlist names a role, not a vague wish to "help out". | Match-day steward for two hours on a Sunday |
| Garda Vetting | A background check needed for roles with children or vulnerable adults. If a shortlisted role involves under-18s or vulnerable adults, note that vetting will be required before you start. | Coaching an underage team or helping in a youth homework club |
| Local opportunity | A role you can realistically reach from school, home or places you already go. At least one of your three shortlist entries must come from the shared class list and be genuinely within reach. | A food collection run from a parish or community centre near you |
First you help build one shared list of real volunteering opportunities within reach of this room, under four headings: local organisation roles, national initiatives, one-off events, and peer programmes. Starter chips are suggestions only. Adopt, reword or replace them with what this room actually knows. A line goes on the shared board list only when it names a real organisation or role someone here could contact.
Then create or open your Volunteering Shortlist in the Strand 1 folder (Appreciating my Community). Suggested filename: Strand1/volunteering_shortlist. Use four columns: Organisation | Role | Hours | Draw. If the file is not there yet, start it now. Choose three specific opportunities you could realistically take up. For each one write: the organisation, the role, the hours it asks of you, and what would draw you to it (why you, specifically). Mark each row's source as class-list or other. At least one must come from the class list rather than a private search alone. If a role involves children or vulnerable adults, note that Garda Vetting would be required.
If you already have a volunteering audit, use it for ideas; you do not need it to start the shortlist. This shortlist is Digital Portfolio groundwork for community participation. You can reuse it when you evidence community engagement in your Portfolio in Action AAC.
Talk these through with the person beside you, or sit with them quietly for a minute.
Optional Digital Portfolio note in your Volunteering Shortlist document: one sentence on which of your three roles you would contact first, and what you would say in the opening message.
Today you participated in mapping volunteering that is actually within reach, then turned that map into a personal shortlist.
Strand1/volunteering_shortlist) with three specific opportunities (organisation, role, hours, and what would draw you to it), at least one taken from the class listOptional stretch: add a fourth shortlist line for a role outside your comfort zone, and name one practical barrier plus one way around it.
