    1 - Introduction ~5 mins

    Welcome

Illustration for IntroductionUnit 1 built workplace habits: filing, templates, save formats, and styles. Today you audit what you already have, fix one real problem with the class, and write a short Unit 1 reflection.

Today's portfolio file (the one that counts as Key Assignment / Project Portfolio evidence): {{code:sm1_unit1_reflection}}. Save it in {{code:sm1}} (start in {{code:01_drafts}}; move the finished version to {{code:03_finished}} when it is complete).

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Demonstrate Unit 1 outcomes on filing, templates, save formats, and styles
    • Troubleshoot a personal Unit 1 problem with class support
    • Reflect on three confident formatting habits and one area for more practice

    Warm-up

Today's job is to bank {{code:sm1_unit1_reflection}}. Open your {{code:sm1}} folder if you can. On scrap paper write either the name of one Unit 1 document you can see, or write {{code:can't find my Unit 1 doc}}. That is enough for now.

If you are behind: incomplete folders or styles are useful information today, not a fail. The clinic is for real problems, including "I never finished applying Heading styles."

    2 - Key Concepts ~5 mins

Your teacher will project this table. Listen for the "why", then match one idea to your Something Real project or Work Experience pack.

    ConceptWhy it mattersExample
Filing framework — stable folders so every file has a homeA supervisor must find the right version in seconds{{code:sm1}} holds {{code:01_drafts}}, {{code:02_templates}}, {{code:03_finished}}, {{code:04_evidence}}, {{code:05_archive}} for your enterprise pitch or Work Experience pack
Styles — Heading 1, Heading 2, Normal from the gallery, not hand-painted each timeKeeps long documents consistent and unlocks later toolsHeading 1 for the main title, Heading 2 for sections on your Something Real one-pager
Save formats — editable file for working; PDF for finished handoutsWrong format locks editing or lets layout driftPDF the finished proposal to a club secretary; keep the editable master for next week

    3 - Step-by-step Task: Unit 1 Audit ~8 mins

    Key point

Run a Unit 1 self-audit on your portfolio document and write one clear clinic sentence. You are not creating the reflection file yet — that comes after the class clinic.

    Tip

If your folders or Unit 1 document are missing, use the fallback in the steps. Incomplete work is clinic fuel, not a fail.

    4 - Troubleshooting Clinic ~5 mins

Clinic now. Your teacher will collect up to three one-sentence problems on the board. Share yours if asked. Listen for fixes that also apply to your file, even if another student raised the issue.

    Key point

Your must-finish file is still {{code:sm1_unit1_reflection}}. Any clinic fix is extra evidence, not a replacement for the reflection. Optional self-fixes (Heading styles, move to {{code:03_finished}}, or PDF to {{code:04_evidence}}) come later in Independent Practice if you have time.

    Common Issues

    IssueSolution
I cannot find {{code:sm1_doc1_from_template.docx}} or my latest versionSearch inside {{code:Project_Portfolio}} for {{code:sm1_doc1}}, or open {{code:09_specialism}}/{{code:sm1}} and sort by modified date. If the file is in Downloads, move a copy into {{code:sm1}}/{{code:01_drafts}} and next time create new files inside that folder first.
Everything still looks like Normal text even after I "styled" itSelect the heading paragraph, then choose Heading 1 or Heading 2 from the styles gallery (not only Bold and a bigger font size). Click into the body and apply Normal so spacing matches across paragraphs.
My clinic problem is "the whole document looks wrong"Narrow it to one Unit 1 skill: filing, template use, save format, character/paragraph rules, or styles. One clear problem gets a clear fix; a vague complaint does not.
I created a file but it is not in {{code:sm1}}Online apps save where the file was created. Move it into {{code:sm1}} now, and next time open that folder first, then choose New.
I need a PDF in {{code:04_evidence}}Word Online: {{menu:File -> Save as -> Download as PDF}}, then move the PDF into {{code:04_evidence}}. Google Docs: {{menu:File -> Download -> PDF Document (.pdf)}}, then move it into {{code:04_evidence}}.

    5 - Step-by-step Task: Reflection Skeleton ~7 mins

Create the skeleton for {{code:sm1_unit1_reflection}} with Heading styles and sentence starters ready to fill. On Word Online the name may show {{code:.docx}} — that is fine. On Google Docs use {{code:sm1_unit1_reflection}}.
