1 - Your Favourite Room ~5 mins
Which room do you spend most time in at home? Think for a moment, then be ready to say why in English.
Today we go further than naming rooms. You will say what you do in each one, in Spanish.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Name eight rooms of the house in Spanish
- Say what you do in a room in a short sentence
- Match each Spanish room name to its English meaning
Take four or five quick answers only. The hook is about personal connection, not a long chat. Do not teach any Spanish room names yet; the flashcards in the next step do that job. If a pupil only knows the English word, that is fine for now.
2 - Eight Rooms on the Cards ~10 mins
English on the front, Spanish on the back. Say the full Spanish aloud, article included, before you flip. Listen carefully to the sounds and stress on each card.
Pattern to notice: room + what you do there
En la cocina, cocino. (In the kitchen, I cook.) · En el dormitorio, duermo. (In the bedroom, I sleep.) · En el baño, me lavo. (In the bathroom, I wash.)
Whole class on the IWB with volunteers taking turns. Insist on the article every time: bare nouns are not enough; the full phrase with el or la is the answer. After a few cards, model the room-plus-action pattern once so pupils hear how a room joins to an action. Class repeats each Spanish word twice, once together and once by table.
Before you leave this step, leave a short action bank visible on the board for the later copy task (first person): cocino, duermo, me lavo, veo la tele, como, leo, juego, estudio. Pupils will reuse these; they are support phrases, not new vocabulary to test.
3 - Label the House ~10 mins
A cutaway house is waiting on the board. Look at each room, then click the correct Spanish label. Say the word quietly as you place it.
Run this as a whole-class turn-taking game on the IWB. Invite one pupil at a time to the board. If a label is wrong, ask the class to say the correct room together before moving on. Keep pointing at the article on each successful label so gender stays attached to the noun.
4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins
Open your copy and write three sentences. Each one names a room and one thing you do there.
Keep the article with every room name, and mind the accents on salón, baño and jardín.
Pattern: En + room + action
En el salón, veo la tele.
Action bank (use these):
cocino · duermo · me lavo · veo la tele · como · leo · juego · estudio
Pause the board and leave the eight rooms plus the action bank visible while they write. Walk the room and check that each sentence follows En + room + action, for example En el salón, veo la tele (In the living room, I watch TV). Pupils may reuse the eight support actions from the board; do not expect untaught verbs. Do not collect the copies. The goal is handwriting the Spanish, accents and all.
5 - Match the Rooms ~10 mins
Flip two cards at a time and find each Spanish room with its English meaning. Say the Spanish quietly as you turn each card. When you find a match, add one short action: En + that room + what you do there.
A different route through the same eight words, still Spanish to English on the cards (the platform pairs meanings). Whole class on the IWB, or pairs if devices are available. If a pair is missed twice, stop and say both sides together before continuing. Listen for clean articles, not bare nouns.
After each correct match, prompt one volunteer for a quick room-plus-action sentence using the board action bank (for example En la cocina, cocino). This keeps the curriculum room-to-activity link alive even though the interactive itself pairs Spanish with English.
