Here is a bar chart of the class's favourite ice-cream flavours. Which flavour was chosen by the most children? Which bar climbs the highest?
The answer chosen most often is called the mode.
Show the chart and take three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Steer the talk toward which flavour was chosen most rather than how many — that distinction is the whole lesson.
Three charts on the board. On each one, look for the tallest bar and say which category it belongs to. On the last chart, watch for two bars that climb to exactly the same height.
Today we build and read three charts together. First we do favourite pets: cat, dog, fish and rabbit. Then we do favourite colours: red, blue, green and yellow. Last we build a chart where two answers tie. For each one, we set the bars from the class data, find the tallest bar, and name the mode out loud.
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Set the bars from the numbers you call, then always ask the same closing question: so what is the mode? Insist the answer is the category name ("dog"), not the count ("six"). On the tied chart, revoice a strong answer: so this set has two modes.
Look at the favourite break-time game chart on the board. In your maths copy, write the category that is the mode. Then write one sentence: "The mode is ___ because it was chosen most often."
Walk the room and glance for the category name (not a number) filling the blank — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking.
Now we find the mode in data that gets trickier each time. First a bar chart with one clearly tallest bar. Then a set of favourite colours we read and name. Then a short set of shoe sizes we set and read. Last, a set where two answers tie for the top — so there are two modes.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
Each round: find the tallest bar, name the mode, press Check. Watch for pupils reading the height number instead of naming the category. On the final tied round, the correct answer names both categories — hold out for a pupil to spot the tie before revealing.
