The Features Walk

Pupils learn six kinds of physical feature from pictures, then walk a short way from the school gate and tick each kind they see. Back inside they match pictures to names, draw the best one, and pin what they found on the school's contour map.

This lesson is made for your school

Its maps and local places change to show each school's own area: its streets, hills, castles and old workplaces. Pick your school to see the lesson as your class would.

    1 - Where Are We? ~5 mins

Find our school in the middle of the map. The colours and lines show high ground and low ground near us.

    Today's question

Our question today is what can we spot on the ground near our gate that nature made?

    2 - Read and Learn ~8 mins

Physical features are the parts of a place that nature made, not people. Here are the six kinds we look for on our walk.

    3 - The Features Walk ~20 mins

We walk a short way from the school gate and back.

    1. Stay with the adults. Keep back from the road. Never step into water.
    2. At each stop, look for the six kinds of physical feature.
    3. Tick each kind you see on your sheet.
    Wet day

If it is too wet to go out, we look out of our classroom windows instead and tick each kind we can see.

4 - Pin What We Found ~17 mins

Back in class: which kinds did we find today?
