All year we have posed questions and counted answers. Today we go the whole way, from the first question to the last sentence.
A fair survey starts with a fixed-answer question: one clear ask, and a short list of answers that every pupil can pick from. Every pupil must fit in exactly one answer, or the count is not fair.
Watch how we pose one real question about our class. Idea: how we got here this morning. Open answers like "my mam drove me but then I walked a bit" do not work, because one person would land in two places. So we fix four answers only: Walk, Cycle, Bus, Car. The finished question is: How did you get to school today?
Before any hands go up, check the list: is each answer clear, and does every pupil fit exactly one? That is how we pose a fixed-answer data question.
Model the pose out loud once, end to end: start from a loose idea (travel to school), reject open or double answers, lock four exclusive categories (Walk, Cycle, Bus, Car), then state the finished question. Take three hands-up suggestions for categories only, not open call-outs, and steer the class onto that small clear set.
Slip to watch: a pupil offers a mixed answer ("car then walk"). Name it as two categories and push them to pick the main one so every pupil still fits exactly one.
Do not collect the full tally yet. The point of this step is the pose: question plus fixed answers agreed before counting begins. The class survey question comes in Try It Together.
A data detective works through five steps in order:
Here is how a finished cycle works. If Walk has twelve tally marks, its frequency is 12. That 12 sets how high Walk's bar goes: twelve marks, twelve high. Every bar is set the same way, count the marks, and the frequency is the height.
Talk through a finished example: if Walk has twelve tally marks, count the gates in fives then the loose marks, and say the one number aloud, that is the frequency. That frequency sets Walk's bar twelve high. "Twelve marks, twelve high."
Hold out for the link before naming it: ask what the tallest and shortest bars would tell us, and let a pupil say most and fewest before you tie those to mode and range.
Now we collect our own. Today we run the survey: What is your favourite break-time game? We agree on four answers first, then each of you calls yours out and a pupil at the board adds a tally mark to the right row.
We will fill the rows in this order as the votes come in: Chasing, Football, Skipping, Handball. Watch the fifth mark cross each gate.
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Settle the four categories before any voting; if the class wants different games, swap them but keep exactly four so the chart stays readable. Rotate four recorders through so several pupils practise the gate. Watch for the fifth-mark slip — the fifth mark crosses the previous four, it is not a fifth upright.
Note the class's four frequencies once the tally is complete — you can carry them into the chart and investigation later in place of the worked-example numbers if you want pupils to work on their own data.
In your maths copy, write your data question at the top. Then draw the tally as the class collects it, and beside each row's marks write the frequency — the one number that says how many times that answer came up.
Walk the room glancing at whether the frequency matches the marks — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Prompt anyone who forgot to write the question at the top.
Time to display and read our data. We build a bar chart, then read the answers off it. We work through these in order. First build a bar up to 4. Then build one up to 8. Then build one up to 12. Finally, set all four bars from an example survey where the counts are 11, 8, 5 and 3.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
The interactive fixes the scale (each square is 1), so read the labels as the target heights to build. Talk about scale as you go: ask the class why a tall chart in ones is fine here, and whether counting in twos would fit a bigger survey — this stays a discussion, the interactive itself does not change scale.
The fourth build uses the worked-example counts 11, 8, 5, 3. If you tallied your own class figures in Try It Together and want pupils to work on their real data, substitute those four counts here instead. Once the class chart is built, use it to name the mode (tallest bar) and work out the range (largest count minus smallest) — that is the key one, and it is the same subtraction every time.
