1 - Gather Your Detective Tools

To create your Data Detective Journal, you will need the following materials:

    • A notebook - This will be your Data Detective Journal where you will record your findings.
    • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons - You will use these to draw and color in your journal.
    • Stickers (optional) - You can use stickers to decorate your journal and make it more fun.

Make sure you have all these materials ready before moving on to the next step.

    2 - Decorate Your Journal

    1. Gather your decorating materials, such as colored pencils, markers, crayons, and stickers.

    2. Open your notebook to the first page and write your name at the top, so everyone knows it's your Data Detective Journal.

    3. On the cover of your notebook, write 'Data Detective Journal' in big, bold letters using your favorite color.

    4. Think about the things you see every day, like your toys, clothes, or favorite snacks. Draw pictures of these items around the title on the cover of your journal.

    5. Use your stickers to add more decorations to the cover. You can place them around the drawings or on any empty spaces.

    6. Make sure to let any wet ink or glue dry before moving on to the next step.

3 - Start Your Data Hunt

It's time to start your data hunt! Look around your classroom or home and find three different objects (e.g., a toy, a book, and a pencil). You can use one of the pictures for this activity, if you'd rather.

Follow these steps to draw a picture of each object in your Data Detective Journal:

    1. Open your Data Detective Journal to a blank page.
    2. Choose one of the objects you found and place it in front of you.
    3. Using your crayons or colored pencils, draw a picture of the object on the left side of the page. Make sure to include any details that you think are important, like its color or shape.
    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other two objects, drawing each one on a new page in your journal.

    4 - Identify the Data

For each object you drew in your Data Detective Journal, follow these steps to write down one piece of information (data) about it:

    1. Look at the first object you drew in your journal.
    2. Think about one detail or characteristic of the object, such as its color, size, or shape.
    3. Write down the detail or characteristic next to the drawing of the object. For example, if you drew a toy car, you could write 'red' to describe its color.
    4. Repeat these steps for each object you drew in your journal.

By writing down these details, you are discovering and collecting data about the objects in your everyday life!
