    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedPut a gentle hand on your throat and hum a quiet tune. What can you feel?

Keep humming. Does the feeling stop when the sound stops?

2 - What Do You Think? ~4 mins

    Key point

Our big question today: what is happening when something makes a sound?

Tell a partner what you think. Then we will try some things and find out.

    3 - Feel the Wobble ~12 mins

    Key point

We will make sounds and notice what is moving. When the sound stops, notice that too.

    Watch together

Watch together — drum and rice: watch the rice when the drum is tapped gently.

Illustration for Feel the wobbleThen at your desks with a partner:

    • Ruler — hold one end firmly so half hangs over the edge. Flick the free end gently. Feel it while it sounds.
    • Elastic band — one of you holds it stretched between two thumbs. Your partner plucks once, then feels the band while it sounds. Then swap.
    • Throat — hum again with fingertips lightly on your throat.

4 - What Did You Notice? ~3 mins

Eyes this way. What did you feel? What did you see?

Tell us about one try: the ruler, the band, your throat, or the rice on the drum.

    5 - See the Wobble ~5 mins

Look at the drum on the board. Watch the skin shake. What is the same as the real drum we just used?

    Key point

The shaking we felt has a name: a wobble. Scientists also say vibration.

    Key point

Sound is what we hear when that wobble reaches our ears.
