Song Techniques, Part 2: Alliteration, Assonance, Internal Rhyme, Imagery, Symbolism

Build on the previous lesson by distinguishing alliteration, assonance and internal rhyme in song lyrics. Then practise annotating imagery and symbolism instances in the class anchor song for your portfolio.

    1 - Getting Started ~5 mins

Today you mark five more techniques in song, then the annotated anchor-song sheet goes in your Communication Portfolio.

You already know rhythm, beat, repetition and sound effects. Now you add alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme, imagery and symbolism. You will practise on a short original verse first, then mark the same five techniques in the class anchor song.

2 - What to Look For ~8 mins

Five techniques. Same move each time: find the words, name the technique, say what it does to a listener.

TermWhat it means for youReal example
AlliterationSame starting consonant nearby; your ear locks onto the run of soundcold coffee, cracked cup
AssonanceSame vowel sound inside nearby words; the line hums without a full rhymego slow, hold the throw
Internal rhymeRhyme landing inside the line; the beat turns mid-sentencenext stop, then the shops
ImagerySensory detail you can almost feel; you see or hear the momentWet tarmac hissing under heavy rain
SymbolismOne concrete thing standing for a bigger idea you work out yourselfAn empty seat kept free at the table

Worked line (not your song): "She walks the wet wall where the water falls. Salt still sticks; a soft song stalls."

    • Alliteration: walks / wet / wall / water; salt still sticks; soft song stalls
    • Assonance: soft song stalls (shared vowel colouring in the run)
    • Internal rhyme: falls / stalls
    • Imagery: salt still sticks (touch and taste on skin)
    • Symbolism: a soft song that stalls can stand for a voice that will not quite start

    3 - Mark It Up ~15 mins

Read the short original verse in the tool, then mark at least four techniques yourself. Include at least one assonance. For each mark, write one sentence on what it does for a listener.

This is practice only. The Portfolio piece is the anchor-song sheet on the next step.

    Practice: mark the short verse

    4 - Write Your Response ~24 mins

Work from the class anchor song lyrics you already have (phone, printout or shared class copy). Do not paste the full song. Type only the short quoted phrases you mark.

Mark at least one example of each of the five techniques (alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme, imagery, symbolism). That is five marks minimum, one per label. For each mark, write one sentence on what it does for a listener. The optional stretch is one line that does two jobs at once.

If you do not have the anchor lyrics today, use the short verse from the practice step and complete the same five marks.

Your marks are not saved: when you finish, press Copy for my portfolio, paste them into the sheet below, and save it in your Communication Portfolio as Song Techniques Sheet, Part 2 using the filename m4_l93_song_techniques_p2_<your-initials>.

Mark the Part 2 techniques in your anchor song

    5 - Think About It ~3 mins

Talk this through with the person beside you, or sit with it on your own:

    • Which technique was easiest to find in the anchor song, and which one made you slow down?
    • If you were writing one new line for this song, which single technique would you reach for first, and why?

The longer thinking can go in your Reflective Journal later if you want it there.
