Simple Grid References: Finding a Square

Learn to name any square on a grid by reading its column letter first, then its row number. Practise finding and naming squares together, then create your own treasure grid.

    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

The grid below has letters along the top and numbers down the side, and a little ship is hiding in one of the squares. How could you tell a friend exactly which square the ship is in, so they look in the very same place and not somewhere close by?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~8 mins

Watch how a grid reference is read: the letter across the top first, then the number down the side. Notice that the letter always comes before the number.

    3 - Try It Together ~11 mins

Today we work through these squares together on the board. We have a tree at one square, an anchor at another and a star at a third. We will name each one in turn: the tree, then the anchor, then the star. For each one, say the column letter across before the row number.

Name the square each object is in

4 - Draw Your Own Treasure Grid ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

Illustration for Draw Your Own Treasure GridIn your maths copy, draw a small four-by-four grid. Label the columns A, B, C and D along the top. Label the rows 1, 2, 3 and 4 down the side. Now hide a treasure. Draw a small X in one square. Underneath, write its grid reference. Write the column letter first. Then write the row number.

    5 - Class Challenge ~7 mins

This board grid is bigger than the one you drew in your copy. It reaches across to column F and down to row 6, so there are squares like B6 that your smaller grid did not have. We work through these together on the board: first find C4, then find A1, then find the hidden ship, then find B6. Each one is a step trickier than the last, so read the letter across before the number every time.
