Think of a chart you saw recently, like a weather forecast or match stats. Was it bars, a pie or a line? What did it show you at a glance?

Key words

• Sort puts rows in order, and filter hides rows you don't need without deleting them.
• Chart type matters. Use columns to compare items, a pie to show shares of a whole, and a line to show change over time.
• Conditional formatting colours cells automatically when they match a rule.
• An IF formula writes a label for you, based on a rule you set.

Common snags

• If sorting mixed up your rows, press {{kbd:Ctrl+Z}} ({{kbd:Cmd+Z}} on a Mac). Then select {{cell:A1}} to {{cell:E6}} before you sort again.
• If your IF formula shows an error, retype it yourself so the quote marks are straight.
• If a chart shows the wrong data, delete it. Type {{code:A1:A6,D1:D6}} in the Name Box, not in a cell, and insert the chart again.
