In this lesson you are participating in using two reflection frameworks on a real moment from your collaborative problem-solving task, not writing about frameworks in the abstract.
Half a page on which method you intend to use later is not the work. Running one awkward, useful moment through STAR and through What/So-What/Now-What is. You leave holding raw material for ALT 3, not a plan about how you might write it someday.
Two frameworks, one job: turn a real collaborative-task moment into evidence you can reuse in ALT 3.
| Term | What it means for you | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result in four short lines. | Best when one decisive action sits at the centre of the moment. | You called a two-minute timer so every idea got heard before the vote. |
| What/So-What/Now-What: what happened, what it means, what you do next. | Best when the moment unfolded over time and the learning is about change. | After the youth-club leader said the workshop clashed with match night, the group cut it to a Saturday pop-up and rewrote the plan the same period. |
| Reflection framework: a fixed set of prompts that structures honest evidence. | Stops your ALT 3 draft drifting into we communicated well with nothing underneath. | You stop writing "the group communicated well" and instead list the missed deadline, the stalled plan, and the written check-in you agreed next. |
First the class builds one shared sample moment through STAR on the board using the list-builder. Agree the wording line by line until each part could be checked by someone who was not there.
Shared sample moment to use if the class needs one: During the developing stage, the group of four could not agree whether to keep a low-cost pop-up or a longer workshop series. Two people dug in. Twenty minutes disappeared. Then one member wrote both options on the board with cost, who it served, and one risk each, and asked the group to score them silently before talking.
After the shared STAR pass, stay with that same sample for two or three minutes and sketch What / So-What / Now-What aloud as a class so both shapes are visible. Use these stems on the board:
Your own work (the portfolio build): create or open your ALT 3 Framework Choice document in your Strand 2.1 folder (a new blank file is fine if it is not there yet; filename: ALT3 Framework Choice). Today's output is both framework runs plus a one-line choice. Pick one real moment from your collaborative task, using your collaborative problem-solving notes from earlier Strand 2 work: the day the group could not agree, the person who did not deliver what they promised, or the point the whole idea had to change. If nothing loud went wrong, use a quiet moment instead (who spoke least, what got dropped, when the plan last changed). Still one specific occasion, still what you personally did. Write that moment both ways:
Then choose: which framework got more out of this moment, and write one line on why that one suited it. You may split: STAR is often sharper on a single decisive action; What/So-What/Now-What when something unfolded. Either answer is defensible if the evidence is real.
This document is raw material for your ALT 3 draft, not a method essay.
Talk these through with the person beside you, then keep any notes you want in your ALT 3 Framework Choice document.
