Here is a finished bar chart: how a class gets to school. Look how high each bar reaches on the numbers at the side. Which bar is tallest? How many more walk than cycle?
The same chart, read three ways. The numbers on top of the bars are hidden, so we read each one off the numbered side. First, run a finger across from the top of each bar to the side and say its number.
Next, name the tallest bar and the shortest bar.
Walk reaches 8 and Cycle reaches 3. How many more means take the smaller number away from the bigger one: 8 − 3 = 5, so five more pupils walk than cycle. Then add Walk and Bus together.
Here is a new chart: favourite break-time snack. Read each answer off the numbered side, type it in the box and press Check.
Four questions: how many chose Apple, the tallest bar, the shortest bar, and how many more chose Yoghurt than Banana.
In your maths copy, write which bar was tallest and how high it reached.
