Pushes and Pulls

In this lesson you will explore how pushes and pulls make objects move. You will try different actions at stations and describe whether each one is a push or a pull and what happened to the object.

    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedWatch this ball. How could we make it move without kicking it with our feet?

Could we send it away from us? Could we bring it toward us? Hands up if you have an idea.

    2 - Push or Pull? ~6 mins

    Key point

Today we have two special words for what our hands can do. A push moves something away from you, or can change its shape. A pull brings something toward you.

Illustration for Push or pull?Watch the door. When I open it, is that a push or a pull?

    3 - Push-and-pull Play Circuit ~15 mins

We will visit four stations: Door, Wagon, Play-dough and Ball.

At each station try the simple action: open the door, pull the wagon, press the play-dough, or roll the ball.

    Key point

Take short turns with the object. When it is not your turn, watch and say out loud: was that a push or a pull, and what happened?

    Watch out

Move gently. Keep hands and feet away from friends. When you hear the signal, go to the next station.

If we have three stations today, we will visit Wagon, Play-dough and Ball, and share the door together between turns.

    4 - Record What Happened ~8 mins

On your Investigation Journal page, choose two stations you tried.

For each one, show whether it was a push or a pull, and draw or write what happened to the object.

5 - Spot Pushes and Pulls Around Us ~5 mins

Look around our classroom. Where can you spot a push? Where can you spot a pull?

Tell your partner one of each. Then we will share a few with the class.
