Warm-up
Which of these would a spell-checker miss: recieve, Gaelscoil, or We need stationary for the stall? Keep your answer in your head for now.
Spell-check underlines words it does not know, like recieve, and suggests a fix.
Grammar check flags sentences that look wrong, like There cases instead of Their cases.
Add to dictionary tells the tool that a word like Gaelscoil is correct.
The read-aloud pass is when you read your work slowly to catch what the tools miss.
Aoife wrote "We need stationary for the price tags." Spell-check missed it because it is a real word. Reading it aloud, she noticed she meant stationery.
You will practise on a paragraph that has mistakes put in on purpose. Copy it into a practice file, then follow the steps in the box below.
I am openning a small stall at the market in Galway. There cases will use GAA colours. I will recieve stock from a printer in Cork. We need stationary for the price tags. The Gaelscoil fundraiser is my first test of demand.
Common issues
- I can't find the checker. In Word it is {{menu:Review -> Editor}}, and in Google Docs it is {{menu:Tools -> Spelling and grammar}}.
- A correct Irish name keeps getting flagged. Right-click it and add it to the dictionary.
- I accepted a bad suggestion. Press {{kbd:Ctrl+Z}} to undo it, then choose Ignore.
