Plan and Make Our Helper

Identify a classroom problem that needs help. Talk about it and share ideas. Draw a quick plan then build a helper from junk materials, fixing it as you go along.

    1 - Look at the Problem ~3 mins

    2 - Talk and Share Ideas ~4 mins

    Our problem today is pencils rolling off the table. Who needs the pencils to stay put? Will the pencils stay on the table when our helper is working?

    3 - Explore the Making Tray ~3 mins

    Illustration for Explore the making trayLook at the junk tray together. Which pieces feel strong enough to stand up? Which ones can bend? Which piece could hold a pencil or make a little wall?

    4 - Make Our Helper ~13 mins

    First, draw a quick plan on the scrap paper. A quick picture is enough. Then, with your partner, make one helper together from the tray. If a piece falls off, you can fix it and try again.

    5 - Draw Our Helper ~5 mins

    On your drawing page, draw the problem and the helper you made. We will keep your helper safe for next time.
