    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Here are two ways to pay for the same sweet. One friend hands over two 50c coins. Another hands over one €1 coin.

    Key point

Hands up: did they both pay the same amount? How can two 50c coins be worth the same as one €1 coin?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~9 mins

Here are four amounts on the money tray. Look carefully at how the same total is built from different coins.

Now look at two bigger amounts. One is made with our biggest coins, and one uses a €5 note.

    3 - Try It Together ~10 mins

    Key point

Today we make these amounts on the money tray: 45c, then €1.10, then €1.75. One pupil comes up to build each amount on the board. The rest of us watch, then call out a second way to make the very same amount.

4 - Write the Coins in Your Copy ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, write three amounts the teacher gives you, one under the other. Beside each amount, list the coins you would use to make it.

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

    Key point

Today we work through these amounts on the money tray: 35c, then 80c, then €1.50, then €5.10. For each one we make the amount and press Check. The last one uses a €5 note, so we say the euro part and the cent part out loud before we check it.
