Mixing Materials

Children visit mixing stations to combine sand with water, flour with water and cornflour with water. They feel each result and say whether it pours or holds its shape, noticing that mixing makes something that feels new.

    The baker mixed flour and water. Today we will mix too. Mixing means stirring two things together. We get to feel what the baker feels. Will our mix run off the spoon, or stay in a lump?

    3 - Mix at the Stations ~11 mins

    4 - What Did We Notice? ~5 mins

    Come back to the carpet. Look at the mixes at the front. Tell us how one looks and feels. Does it pour, or does it stay in a lump?

    5 - Make-sense Talk ~3 mins

    Look back at our baker. Mixing flour and water changed how they felt. What changed when we mixed at our stations?
