Make a Boat That Holds Things

Create a simple boat using foil and lolly sticks that can float on water. Test how many counters the boat can carry before it tips over. Then adjust the shape once to improve how much it holds.

    1 - Look at the Problem ~2 mins

    2 - Talk and Share Ideas ~2 mins

    How could we make a boat that stays up on the water and holds counters? Share one idea with your partner. Then we will hear a few together.

    3 - Make Our Boat ~12 mins

    With your partner, make one boat from foil and lolly sticks. You may use a little modelling clay to hold parts together. Remember: sides up, and a space inside for counters.

    4 - Float and Add Counters ~6 mins

    We take turns at the water trays.

    Key point

    Your turn: put the boat on gently. Add counters one by one in the middle. Stop when it tips or water comes in.

    Tip

    At your tray: watch and count out loud. How many did it hold?

    5 - Improve the Shape Once ~5 mins

    Key point

    Dry your boat on a towel at your table. Change the shape once: turn the sides up higher.

    Then take turns at the water trays again for a quick try. What do you notice?
