Languages in Our School

You will explore the different languages you already see and hear around your school. You will listen to classroom words in English, Irish and another language, practise guessing languages from short clips, and talk about where languages come from in your school.

    1 - Signs on the Way in ~5 mins

    Think about every sign, label and notice you passed on the way into this room. Which language was each one written in? Was it Irish, English, or both side by side? By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:Spot languages already used around our schoolHear three classroom words in five languagesNotice that language is not only for this lesson

    2 - Three Classroom Words ~9 mins

    Watch the three classroom-word cards on the board. Listen to each language. Join in out loud for English, Irish and the one extra language your teacher chooses. For the others, just listen and notice if any sound a bit like English.

    3 - Which Language Is That? ~10 mins

    Four short clips will play. Listen twice before anyone answers. The languages you might hear are: IrishEnglishFrenchGermanSpanishTipAfter the second listen, point to the language on the board or raise your hand when your teacher names it. Trust your ear, not a lucky guess.

    4 - Into Your Copy ~5 mins

    Open your copy. Write the word for book in two languages, and draw a small picture of a book beside them. book (English)leabhar (Irish)le livre (French)Choose any two of those three. Then on the next line write one form you remember for pencil or bag (any language you heard is fine) and a tiny sketch beside it.

    5 - Words Side by Side ~9 mins

    Look at the word table on the board. We will open one row at a time. Your job is a hunt: which words look like a family, and which word looks nothing like the others?
