Today you build the promotional piece for ICT2 KA3. Before any blank page opens, tick these four off with your teacher:
If something is missing:
In one sentence: where would a real person first see this piece, and what must they understand in the first three seconds?
Your teacher will walk hierarchy on one strong flyer. Keep this sticky in mind while you build:
Headline → proof → image/chart → CTA → breathing room
| Concept | Why it matters | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Surface-first layout — design for where the piece will actually be seen | A laptop layout can fail on a phone or from two metres on a wall | Noticeboard poster: huge headline; phone carousel: shorter lines |
| Visual hierarchy — headline, key message, proof, call to action | If everything is the same weight, nothing stands out | “Saturday skills stall — stickers from €3” then one proof line then the place and time |
| Text + graphic + image — KA3 needs the combination | Words explain, a chart proves numbers, an image makes it real | Short offer, pie of budget split, edited product photo |
| Call to action (CTA) — the one next step | Promo without a next step is decoration | “Ask at the Work Experience desk” or “Scan to sign up” |
Before you build, watch the projector demo. Your teacher will show three clicks live: (1) screenshot a chart into {{code:08_promo}}, (2) insert an image and turn on Square / Wrap text, (3) export a PDF. In Word Online that is {{btn:File}} then {{btn:Save as}} then {{btn:Download as PDF}} (if you see {{btn:Export}} instead of Save as, open Export and choose {{btn:Download as PDF}}). In Google Docs that is {{menu:File -> Download -> PDF Document (.pdf)}}. You will repeat that PDF path at the end of your own build so the file lands beside the editable document, not on top of it.
Start here: open your tool tab below (Word Online or Google Docs) and begin at step 1. Work that tab in order.
Must-have today (in this order): file named in {{code:08_promo}} → real headline and proof → edited image → chart or infographic → CTA → surface check → PDF named {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document.pdf}}. Polish colours only after those are in. Your teacher will call a mid-lab check when the file is named, the headline is real, and the image is on the page.
Keep the Common issues table open in another tab or on the board while you build — especially wrap and missing asset.
Before you start, gather:
Missing an asset? No chart → temporary three-cost table graphic. No image → class placeholder from your teacher. No plan → teacher surface/headline/CTA defaults for today. Create {{code:08_promo}} now if it is missing.
Use the same content order as the flyer path. Numbered mini-path:
Your teacher models three things on the projector before you race ahead: (1) chart screenshot into {{code:08_promo}}, (2) insert image and turn on Square / Wrap text, (3) Download as PDF and name it {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document.pdf}}. Follow those same clicks in your own tab at the matching steps.
Use this as a side panel during the build (your teacher projects the top two mid-lab). Glance here if you get stuck; do not stop the whole class for a long read.
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| My page looks empty or the image sits on top of the text | Select the image and turn on text wrapping (Word Online: wrap options on the picture toolbar, try Square; Google Docs: image options → Wrap text). Then resize so text and image each have a clear block. |
| I cannot find my edited image or chart file | Check Downloads, then your Project Portfolio folders and {{code:08_promo}}. If the chart only exists inside the spreadsheet, open {{code:06_ka2_charts}}, screenshot it (Win+Shift+S / Cmd+Shift+4 / Chromebook screenshot keys), save the screenshot into {{code:08_promo}}, and insert that. |
| The layout looks fine on my laptop but fails the surface check | Zoom to full page, stand back from the screen, and read only what is still obvious. Enlarge the headline and CTA, shrink decoration, cut any sentence that is not earning its space, and leave breathing room between blocks. |
| I am building in Canva and the tabs above are for Word Online or Docs | Use the Canva mini-path in the build step: correct template size → headline → proof text → upload edited image → upload chart or three shape boxes → CTA → Download PDF Print as {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document.pdf}} → also bank {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document_canva_link}} in {{code:08_promo}}. |
| My PDF is in Downloads, not in {{code:08_promo}}, or it overwrote the editable file | Upload or move the downloaded PDF into {{code:08_promo}} and name it {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document.pdf}}. Keep the editable file as {{code:08_ka3_promotional_document}} beside it — two separate files. |
