Float and Sink: Guess and Sort

Guess whether objects will float or sink before testing them in water. Watch a demonstration, predict outcomes for items like spoons and sponges, test at the water tray, sort dry copies into groups, draw your findings and discuss surprises.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

    2 - Look and Guess ~2 mins

    Look at each thing I hold up. Thumbs up if you think it will float and stay on top. Thumbs down if you think it will sink and go down to the bottom.

    3 - Surprising Pairs on the Board ~3 mins

    Guess first, then we drop and watch. We will start with the big log and the small nail.

    4 - Water Tray Play ~9 mins

    Illustration for Water tray playAt the water tray, pick one thing. Guess float or sink first. Then put it in and watch. Try the next one the same way.

    5 - Sort Float and Sink ~4 mins

    Use the dry things in the tub, the ones that stayed dry. Put the ones that floated in the float hoop. Put the ones that sank in the sink hoop.
