    1 - Introduction ~5 mins

    Today you will

    • improve the wording and layout of your proposal and your letter
    • save a PDF of each one
    • tick the Key Assignment 1 checklist and show your teacher

    Warm-up

Illustration for IntroductionOpen {{code:03_proposal_draft}} in your {{code:03_documents}} folder. Find one sentence that is vague or too long. That is the first sentence you will rewrite.

If a file is missing, tell your teacher now.

    2 - Key Concepts ~5 mins

Your teacher checks each document for five things.

    • Created: you made it in a word processor.
    • Stored: it is saved in {{code:03_documents}}.
    • Edited: you changed the wording or the layout.
    • Printable: a clean PDF is saved beside it.
    • Specific purpose: it has a real reader and a clear job.

    Example

Before: "This project is something I kind of want to do because it would be good for the community and stuff."

After: "This community clean-up day will give local volunteers a clear three-hour plan."

3 - Guided Edit: Finish the Proposal ~12 mins

Now you will improve your proposal. Follow the steps in the box below and tick each one. You'll do the letter in the next task.

    Tip

One good rewrite and one layout fix count for more than a new font.

    4 - Common Issues ~3 mins

    Common issues

    • I only changed the font. That is not enough. Rewrite a sentence and fix the layout too.
    • I can't find my PDF. Look in your Downloads folder, then move it into {{code:03_documents}}.
    • Part of the page is cut off in the PDF. Shrink the picture or the margins, then save the PDF again with the same name.

    5 - Portfolio Build: Letter, Self-check, Verify ~25 mins

    Portfolio Build: letter and checklist

Your goal: Finish your letter and check both documents for Key Assignment 1.
    Time: ~25 minutes
    Task:
    1. Open {{code:03_letter}} in {{code:03_documents}}.
    2. Make sure it has every part in the list.
    3. Rewrite two weak sentences and make one layout fix.
    4. Save {{code:03_letter.pdf}} in {{code:03_documents}}.
    5. Go through the checklist for both documents.
    6. When every line is a yes, put up your hand for your teacher.
    Success criteria:
    • My letter has one clear purpose and one clear ask.
    • I rewrote a sentence and fixed the layout in both documents.
    • The four files are saved in {{code:03_documents}}.
    • Every checklist line is a yes.

    Letter parts

    1. Your address and date
    2. Recipient (who you are writing to)
    3. Greeting, such as Dear Ms Murphy
    4. Short body with one clear purpose and one clear ask
    5. Polite sign-off and your name
    Example opening

"I am writing to ask if Centra could donate two boxes of refuse sacks for our community clean-up on 12 May."
