You already know how to measure an angle that is already drawn on the page. Today the job flips: I will give you a size, and you draw the angle to match.
Watch the screen. I am going to draw a 60° angle in three moves. Before I start, tell me: which do you think comes first, the dot in the middle or the slanted line?
Take two or three hands-up answers, don't settle it yet — we'll see who's right in a moment. Keep this to a single question; the drawing itself happens in the next step.
Each angle was drawn in three moves: mark the dot, rule the baseline, then count round to the target and mark it, and rule the second ray through that mark. Here are four angles drawn to a target: 60°, then 95°, then 135°, then a tricky 175° that is almost a straight line. For each one, look at where the ray lands against the scale.
The 175° one is the one to watch: the ray is nearly flat, so a tiny slip changes the reading a lot.
Name the three moves as you point at the first one: mark the dot, rule the baseline, count round to the target and mark it. Then rule the second ray through that mark.
Say the target aloud together before anyone drags the ray.
Today we draw these angles together on the board: 110°, then 75°, then 90°. The whole class calls out the size and predicts where the ray has to land, then a volunteer comes up to set it on the board.
Talk this one through together — a volunteer takes each turn at the board while the class predicts aloud and agrees or corrects.
For each target, ask the class where the ray will land before the pupil at the board sets it. The 90° one is the checkpoint: this is the square corner — both halves of the scale read the same here. Keep it brisk; three angles, three volunteers.
Now you draw them yourself. In your maths copy, use your protractor to draw each of these angles and label it with its size underneath:
When you finish, circle the one you found hardest to draw.
Walk the room glancing for the dot-first order and clean baselines — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Catch the reading-the-wrong-scale slip on 115° and 165° as you pass.
Now we practise to the target on the board. We work through these in order: 40°, then 125°, then 90°, and finally 160°. Set the ray, then use Check to confirm each one before we move on.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
