Discover Insects (Los Insectos)

Learn the Spanish names for eight common insects along with their definite articles. Practise forming sentences about where they live and discuss their usefulness to people, including a safety note about caterpillars.

    1 - Insects You Barely Notice ~5 mins

    Illustration for Insects you barely noticeHow many insects have you seen today without noticing? An ant on the path, a bee on a flower, a beetle under a leaf: they are everywhere once you start looking.

    By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name eight insects in Spanish
    • Say where a creature lives in a short sentence
    • Talk about which insects are useful to people

    2 - Eight Spanish Insects ~10 mins

    Key point

    Here are today's eight insects. Tap each one, listen, then say it back together. Watch which ones take la and which take el.

    Place strip (we will use these today):

    • la colmena (the hive)
    • el jardín (the garden)
    • el árbol (the tree)
    • el parque (the park)
    • el pino (the pine)

    Sentence frame: ___ vive en ___

    La abeja vive en la colmena. (The bee lives in the hive.)

    La oruga vive en el pino. (The caterpillar lives in the pine.)

    La mariposa vive en el parque. (The butterfly lives in the park.)

    3 - Where Does It Live? ~10 mins

    Key point

    Spin the wheel. When it lands on an insect, say the Spanish word, then finish the frame using a place from the strip.

    • en el parque
    • en el pino

    4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

    Open your copy and write two sentences from the board bank. Each one names an insect and where it lives. Use el or la, vive en, and one place from the strip. Copy accents only if they appear on the model (for example the accent in jardín).

    5 - Label the Insects ~10 mins

    Look at each picture on the board. On three, the whole class whisper-says the Spanish label. Then a volunteer clicks the answer. After each one, thumbs up if you agree.
