Clothes (La Ropa)

In this Spanish lesson, students learn eight clothing vocabulary items with their definite articles. Through interactive activities set around a rainy day in Bilbao, they label a dressed figure and compare school dress customs across the Spanish-speaking world.

    1 - What Are You Wearing? ~5 mins

    Illustration for What are you wearing?Look at the person beside you. In one English sentence, describe what they are wearing right now.

    Keep it short: colour plus item, for example “a blue jumper and black trousers”. In a moment we will learn the Spanish words for clothes like these.

    By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • Name eight clothing items in Spanish with el, la or los
    • Label a dressed figure with the right Spanish words
    • Compare school dress customs and recycle one Spanish clothes word

    2 - Eight Clothing Words ~10 mins

    Here are today's eight clothing words. English shows first: try to say the Spanish before you flip, then listen and repeat together. Watch which ones take el, la or los.

    3 - Dress the Figure ~10 mins

    Sofía is getting ready for a rainy day in Bilbao. We will label what she puts on together on the board. When a classmate places a word, say it aloud with el, la or los. Be ready to help if you know it.

    4 - Into Your Copy ~3 mins

    Open your copy. Write four clothing words from today's list, each with el, la or los. You can pick ones you are wearing, or any four from the board. Check the board for spelling and the accent mark on suéter.

    5 - Match the Clothes ~10 mins

    We will match Spanish and English on the board. When a pair is turned, whisper the Spanish with el, la or los.
