Here is a 250 ml glass next to a 2 l carton of milk. Capacity means how much a container can hold.
Roughly how many of those glasses do you think we could fill from one full carton? Have a guess before we work it out.
Take three hands-up estimates, not open call-outs. Don't confirm or correct yet — the answer (eight glasses) lands later in the lesson. Hold on to your guess, we'll check it near the end.
Look at the jugs in the picture. Read the level on each and notice how the marks are spaced — some count in 50 ml, some in 100 ml. Look closely at the top of the water: it curves up at the sides. That curve is the meniscus, and we read the flat dip in the middle, with our eye level with the mark.
Point at the flat middle of each surface as the class reads it aloud.
Meniscus: water climbs where it touches the sides, so read the middle, eye level.
Glass 250 ml — scale to 1 l, minor marks every 50 ml. Say a quarter of a litre so the fraction link resurfaces.
Bottle 500 ml — halfway to one litre, half a litre.
Carton 1,000 ml, filled to the top litre mark. Ask: what is 1,000 ml in litres? Take two hands-up answers before the fourth jug.
Big bottle uses a bigger scale — marks every 100 ml, up to 2 l. Confirm pupils have noticed the change before they read. Level sits a quarter past 1 l: 1.25 l, the same as 1,250 ml.
Today we work through setting the liquid level to a called-out volume: first 100 ml, then 250 ml, then 500 ml, then 750 ml. Watch how far up the scale the level has to climb each time.
Remember the fractions of a litre as we go: 250 ml is a quarter, 500 ml is a half, and 750 ml is three quarters of a litre.
Try Together: work through this on the board with the class, one pupil driving while the others predict and check.
Individual pupils drag the level to each target while the class calls out where it should stop. Watch for pupils who read the scale by the top of the curve rather than the flat middle. Revoice a good reading: eye level with the mark, read the dip. Notice with the class that 500 ml is exactly halfway and 750 ml is three of the four quarter-marks.
In your maths copy, sketch each jug as a tall rectangle. Mark the key readings up the side: 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 l.
Then draw the liquid level (the meniscus) at 100 ml on the first jug, 250 ml on the second, 500 ml on the third and 1 l on the fourth, and write the volume underneath each jug.
Walk the room glancing for evenly-spaced marks and a level drawn straight across — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. Prompt any pupil whose marks are unevenly spaced to check that 500 ml sits exactly halfway.
Today we set the level to match each target in turn: 100 ml, then 250 ml, then 450 ml, then 750 ml, and finally 1.25 l on the bigger jug. The 450 ml one lands exactly on a minor mark between the 400 and 500 marks.
The last target is on the bigger jug: its scale goes up to 2 l and its small marks jump by 100 ml, so read it more carefully. The level climbs a quarter past the litre line to 1.25 l.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
The 450 ml target lands exactly on a minor mark between the 400 and 500 marks. The 1.25 l target switches to the 2 l jug (marks every 100 ml), which the board now states — confirm the class has noticed the change before that one. Have the class predict where each level will stop before the pupil at the board drags it.
