Here is a bar chart of how many points four players scored last season. One player scored 30 points; the other three scored much less.
Look at the tallest bar. What has gone wrong with this chart, and what would you change to fix it?
Take two or three hands-up answers, not open call-outs. Listen for pupils spotting that the big bar runs off the top of the grid.
Don't name the fix yet — hold out for pupils to reach for it themselves in the next step.
Here is the same set of points (4, 6, 30, 8) drawn three times. Only one thing changes each time: how much each gridline is worth going up the side.
Look at all three together. One of these charts makes your eyes work far too hard, so see if you can spot which one! Which is fiddly to draw? Which squashes the short bars? Which lets you read every bar at a glance?
Point along the three charts in turn. The step of 1 needs thirty-one gridlines — tedious and cramped. The step of 5 reads Ruairí's 30 in a glance.
The catch to draw out: a step of 5 is easiest here, but the short bars (4, 6, 8) do not land on gridlines, and 6 and 8 share a band, so they get harder to tell apart. That trade-off is the whole lesson — big enough to fit the tall bar, small enough to keep the short ones distinct.
Today we work with the goals four teams scored in a blitz: 25, 5, 3, 7. We'll build the bars on the board first. Then, on the same builder, we'll change the step to 2, then to 5, then to 10, and watch how the same data looks each time. Together we'll decide which step tells the story best.
Talk this one through together — pupils take turns at the board and the class agrees or corrects out loud.
Set the bars to 25, 5, 3, 7 first. Then change the step live on the builder. At a step of 2 the Reds bar (25) still fits within the grid but needs many lines and doesn't sit on a line. At a step of 10 the three small bars nearly merge. Land on a step of 5 as the comfortable middle.
Watch for pupils choosing a step just because it looks tidy — push them to check that the tallest bar fits AND the shortest bars stay distinct.
On your own squared paper, rule two small grids side by side. Use the blitz goals from a moment ago: Reds 25, Blues 5, Greens 3, Golds 7. On the first grid, mark the up-the-side lines at a step of 1; on the second, mark them at a step of 5. Draw the same four bars on both. Underneath, write one sentence saying which scale tells the story best and why.
Pupils use their own squared paper for this. The data set is the blitz goals from Try It Together (25, 5, 3, 7), so they already know the numbers. Walk the room glancing at whether the tallest bar fits inside each frame — this is whole-class copybook practice, not marking. If time is tight, pupils can finish the sentence as homework.
Now some quick building practice. All five charts share one grid, marked in fives up to 60, so you can plot fast and read the scores at a glance. First a friendly with small, close scores. Next a game where one team pulled a little ahead. Then a match where one team ran away with it. After that, the county final, where every team scored big. Last of all, a tight game where all four teams land on two consecutive bands, so you have to look carefully. Build each chart to match the numbers, then check.
This is the practice round — pupils take turns at the board, check each answer, and the class confirms before moving on. Keep the board work brisk rather than over-explaining.
The grid is fixed here (step of 5, up to 60) so the drawing stays quick; the scale-choosing thinking has already been done in the earlier steps. Draw the thinking out through the scores instead: in the friendly the bars huddle at the bottom, while in the county final they fill the grid. The last chart is the key one — the values 40, 45, 40 and 45 sit on two consecutive step-of-5 gridlines, so ask the class whether a bigger step would still let you tell the teams apart. Let pupils reach that themselves.
