A Senses Hunt in the School Garden

Pupils use sight, hearing, touch and smell to explore the school garden. At planned stops they find something colourful, something that makes a sound, something rough and something with a smell. Observations are recorded on an Investigation Journal page.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedToday we take our senses outside. What might you notice in the school garden if you look, listen, touch and smell carefully?

Even a quiet hedge can hide a bird your eyes miss until your ears find it.

Hands up one thing you think you might find.

    2 - Our Words ~2 mins

    Our words

Senses outdoors — eyes, ears, hands and nose outside. Example: close your eyes to hear a bird.

Observation — say what you really noticed. Example: "I felt rough bark."

    3 - Our Hunt Jobs ~2 mins

    Our hunt jobs

On our hunt we will find:

    • 👁 something colourful (sight)
    • 👂 something that makes a sound (hearing)
    • ✋ something rough (touch)
    • 👃 something with a smell (smell)
    Watch out

We will not taste anything outside.

4 - What Might We Notice? ~3 mins

Before we go out, think with a partner. What might your eyes find? What might your ears hear? What might feel rough? What might have a smell?

Share one idea you think you might find with the class.

    5 - Senses Hunt Outdoors ~17 mins

Illustration for Senses hunt outdoorsWe walk the garden path together and stop at each spot the teacher chooses. At the stops, use your senses to find:

    • something colourful (sight)
    • something that makes a sound (hearing)
    • something rough (touch)
    • something with a smell (smell)
    Note

On the walk we only look, listen, touch and smell. We draw and write when we come back.

    Watch out

Stay with the group. Touch only what the teacher says is safe. Do not pick or taste anything.
