1 - What Language Does Switzerland Speak? ~5 mins

What language does Switzerland speak? Take a guess before we reveal anything. It is a trick question, and the trick is the whole point of today's lesson.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    • See that a language is not the same shape as a country
    • Name a country with more than one official language
    • Name a language spoken in more than one country

2 - Nature Words Across Languages ~9 mins

Watch and listen as we open each nature word on the board. Which ones sound almost the same across languages, and which ones take a completely different path?

Then think: which of these words might you hear on both sides of a border?

3 - Languages on the Africa Map ~10 mins

Look at the language map of Africa together. Which countries hold more than one language side by side? Spot a place where a language colour crosses a border.

Notice places where a long-standing home language sits next to a language that came from somewhere else. Language shape and country shape are not the same.

    4 - Into Your Copy ~4 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

Open your copy. Write one country with more than one official language, and one language spoken in more than one country.

If you need a start, try these stems:

    • Country with more than one language: ________ (e.g. Switzerland)
    • Language spoken in more than one country: ________ (e.g. Spanish)

5 - Which Language Is This? ~9 mins

Listen to each word. Can you tell which language it belongs to? Use the sounds you already know as clues, then check your guess.
