    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedHere are three everyday things: a triangular yield road sign, a four-pane window, and a six-sided warning sign.

Hands up: how many straight sides does each one have? And what do we call the pointy corners where two sides meet?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~9 mins

Four shapes on the board, one at a time. For each one, count the straight sides with me, then the corners. The corners where two sides meet are also called vertices.

    3 - Try It Together ~11 mins

Let's mark these up together on the board. First a pentagon. Then a hexagon. Then an eight-sided shape. Last, back to that eight-sided shape, but this time count the corners instead of the sides. For each one, say how many sides and corners you expect. Then a pupil taps to number the sides and dot the corners so we can check.

4 - Draw and Label in Your Copy ~3 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, draw a triangle, a square, a pentagon and a hexagon. Beside each one, write how many sides and how many vertices it has.

    5 - Class Challenge ~7 mins

    Key point

Your turn to predict — read each question first. We'll work through these together at the board. Read each question, predict the answer, then tap Check to see it on the shape.
