Through engagement with a relevant and engaging project, students gain experience in representing authentic planning and budgeting decisions with mathematics, analysing the mathematics, and communicating the findings. The module is typically delivered through a single project the class picks together in Lesson 1 — decorating a room, building a set for the school play, renovating an outdoor space, designing a playground, or building a scaled model — and uses authentic Irish data throughout (real catalogue prices from Woodies or IKEA, real measurements, real supplier quotes). Students apply MCS 1–5 through this concrete context: measuring a space, producing scaled plans, comparing suppliers, building a budget, making value-for-money judgements, and writing up the plan.

Students gain experience in representing issues relating to current affairs, travel and recreation with mathematics. The module uses timely local contexts such as waste management, housing, public transport or a school event. Strong emphasis is placed on statistical investigation (MCS.5) through survey design, data collection, charting, summary statistics and critique of misleading statistics. Students produce a second case study for their Maths Portfolio.

Current Affairs

Students gain experience in representing healthy lifestyle choices, personal finance, food and fitness with mathematics. Contexts are often personal: a budget for moving out, a couch-to-5k plan, nutrition analysis or phone upgrade. The module interleaves personal finance and healthy life choices. Students produce a third case study for their Maths Portfolio with strong links to Practical Achievement and Personal Reflection Tasks.

Personal Finance and Healthy Life Choices
Deepening MCS, Key Assignment Workshop and Exam Preparation

Students gain experience in representing work-related mathematics including income, expenditure, job estimates, wages, payslips and contracts. The module links closely to Vocational Preparation and Guidance and Vocational Specialisms. Students analyse real payslips, create job estimates including materials, labour, overheads, VAT and profit, compare contracts and produce a fourth case study for their Maths Portfolio. This completes the 4 mandatory Key Assignments.
