Where Energy Comes from: Renewable or Not?

Discover where energy comes from by sorting sources like wind and gas into groups that will or will not run out. See what Ireland uses on a map and build a pinwheel to feel renewable wind energy yourself.

    1 - Getting Started ~5 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedWhen you switch on a light or charge a tablet, where does that energy come from? Hands up one idea.

Today we will sort energy sources into two big groups and feel one of them for ourselves.

    2 - Renewable or Not? ~7 mins

Illustration for Renewable or not?Energy comes from an energy source — a place or thing that gives us heat, light or power.

    Key point

Today we sort sources into two groups:

    • Keeps coming back (we call this renewable)
    • Will run out one day (we call this non-renewable)

Turn and talk: if we keep using something for years and years, will nature make more of it quickly, or will it slowly disappear? Be ready to share one idea with hands up.

3 - Sort the Energy Sources ~12 mins

In your group, look at the six energy-source cards:

    • wind — moving air
    • sun — light and heat from the sun
    • turf — peat from Irish bogs
    • gas — natural gas from under the ground
    • moving water — rivers and dams that make electricity
    • wood — trees grown for fuel
    Key point

Sort each card into renewable (keeps coming back) or non-renewable (will run out). Talk about why before you place it. Be ready to share one choice with the class.

4 - Check Our Sort on the Board ~8 mins

Look at the six cards on the interactive: wind, sun, turf, gas, moving water and wood.

We will answer the question on screen and send each one to renewable or non-renewable. Call out where you think each card belongs, and say why.

    Renewable or non-renewable?

5 - Energy on the Ireland Map ~7 mins

Illustration for Energy on the Ireland mapIreland once burned a lot of turf; now many hills have wind turbines spinning in the same weather that flaps your coat.

Look at this outline of Ireland on the board. Together we will place each energy source where you might notice it in Ireland, and say renewable or non-renewable as it goes on:

    • wind — hills and coasts
    • moving water — rivers and dams
    • sun — rooftop panels
    • gas — power stations and some homes
    • wood — grown as fuel
    • turf — bogs
    Key point

When it is your turn, call out where the marker should go and whether that source keeps coming back or will run out.
