Technology in Irish Life: Advantages and Drawbacks

Students examine real Irish technologies by comparing tasks completed with and without modern tools. They identify advantages and drawbacks based on the setting and present reasoned choices for different situations.

    1 - Getting Started ~5 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedThink of one technology you used today before school. A phone alarm? A bus or traffic app? A kettle that clicks off? What job did it do for you?

Today we will weigh real Irish technologies: not only what they can do, but when they help and when they get in the way.

    2 - Weighing a Technology ~6 mins

    Three short words for today.

Advantage: a real help the tool gives you. Example: a bus tracker shows the next bus is five minutes away, so you are not guessing in the rain at a city stop.

Drawback: a real problem with that tool. Example: if the phone battery is dead, the tracker cannot help at all.

Setting: the place where the job happens. A busy city bus stop is one setting. A quiet rural stop with weak signal is another. The same tool can win in one place and lose in the other.

    Key point

Our job is to compare two ways of doing the same job and say which suits which place.

3 - Research One Irish Technology ~22 mins

Irish life runs on tools your grandparents never had, and on older ways that still work. Your group becomes the experts on one of them.

    Key point

You get one Irish everyday technology. Read your research cards. Compare two ways of doing the same job: with the technology and without it (the older or simpler way).

    Work in this order together:

    1. Read all five cards in your set (take turns).
    2. Say the job in one short sentence.
    3. Name the two ways: with the technology and without it.
    4. Pick at least three things you will judge by (use the board list or swap one).
    5. For each judge-by, note a help and a problem for each way (short phrases are fine).
    6. Agree one place where the technology suits best and one place where the simpler way suits better.
    Note

Things we will judge by (tick three, or swap one): speed · how sure you can be · cost · who can use it · what happens when it fails · who is left out.

    4 - Record the Comparison ~10 mins

    Tip

On your Investigation Journal page, capture your group's comparison. Short phrases are fine; you do not need full sentences.

Use this checklist as you write:

    1. Name the job and the technology.
    2. Way with it / way without it.
    3. Three things you judged by.
    4. Helps and problems linked to those judge-bys.
    5. Who wins where: one place for the technology, one place for the simpler way, and why.

5 - Present Which Suits Which Setting ~10 mins

Teach the class something they could actually use at a real bus stop, farm or kitchen table.

    Key point

Each presenting group has about one minute. Tell us: the job, the two options, one strong advantage, one strong drawback, and which option suits which place.

    Note

Listeners: be ready to ask one respectful question about a place the group did not mention.
