Magnets: Guess What They'll Pull

In this lesson, children guess if a magnet will pull different objects, then test with a chunky magnet. They sort the objects and draw what happened to see if their guesses were right.

    1 - Getting Started ~3 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedLook at this chunky magnet. What do you think it can pull? Hands up if you have an idea.

2 - Guess Then Find Out ~4 mins

Illustration for Guess then find outGuess first, then try. We will find out what this magnet can pull.

3 - Magnet Hunt: Guess Then Test ~12 mins

    Key point

At your tray, one object at a time:

    1. Guess first — thumbs up or thumbs down.
    2. Then test slowly with the chunky magnet.
    3. Then put it in the yes pile or the no pile.
    Tip

Take turns so everyone gets a go.

    4 - Watch and Draw ~6 mins

Look at your yes pile and your no pile. On your drawing page, draw two things: one the magnet pulled and one it did not. Two drawings are enough. If a guess surprised you, you may add a circle or mark on that drawing — only if you want to.

    5 - Make-sense Talk ~3 mins

What did the magnet pull? What did it not pull? Whose guess matched? Whose guess was a surprise? Scientists make a good guess before they test — just like us.
