    1 - What is Coding

Coding, also known as programming, is the process of writing instructions that tell a computer what to do. These instructions are written in a programming language, which is a set of rules and commands that computers can understand and follow.

Imagine you're telling a computer how to perform a task, like making a character move in a game or calculating the total cost of items in a shopping app. You break down the task into small, logical steps, and the computer executes them exactly as you've written.

Coding powers everything from the apps on your phone to the websites you visit and even the software in smart devices. It's a skill that combines logic, problem-solving, and creativity to build digital solutions.

As you learn coding, you'll start with simple tasks and build up to creating your own projects. It's challenging but rewarding, and it's a key part of how technology works in our world.

    2 - Why Learn Coding?

Coding is very important because it helps create all the apps, games, and websites you use every day. Think about your favourite video game, website, or app – someone had to code every part of that.

Learning to code isn't just about computers; it helps you solve problems in a logical way. For example, if you're figuring out how to plan your revision schedule for exams or strategise for a team sports game, coding teaches you to break things down into small steps, just like giving instructions to that robot friend we talked about earlier.

Plus, coding lets you be really creative! You can design your own stories, animations, or even inventions on the screen. Imagine making a game where a superhero saves the day – that's something you could create.

In the future, knowing how to code can lead to exciting jobs, like becoming a game developer, app designer, or even working on robots and AI. You'll get to see your ideas come to life, and it's okay to make mistakes – that's how you learn and improve.

    3 - What Are Computers?

Computers are electronic devices designed to process, store, and manage data quickly and efficiently. They come in many forms, from the laptop or tablet you might use for schoolwork to powerful servers that run websites like YouTube or Google. At their core, computers follow a set of instructions to perform calculations, make decisions, and control other devices.

In the context of coding, computers are like blank canvases waiting for your ideas. Coding is how you provide those instructions – using programming languages to tell the computer exactly what to do, step by step. For example, when you code a game, you're instructing the computer on how characters should move, how scores are calculated, and what happens when a player wins or loses.

Unlike humans, computers don't understand natural language; they need precise, logical commands. That's why learning to code helps you think logically and solve problems methodically. As you progress, you'll see how coding powers everything from apps on your phone to automated systems in cars or homes.

Remember, computers are tools that amplify human creativity – with coding, you control what they do.

4 - Computers in Your House

Can you name 3 things in your house that have computers in them and that you can give instructions to?

    see some examples

Here are some examples of things in your house that have computers in them and that you can give instructions to:

    1. a TV - you give it instructions using the remote control
    2. a phone - you give it instructions by tapping on the screen
    3. a microwave - you give it instructions by pressing the buttons
    4. a games console - you give it instructions using the gamepad

    5 - Giving Instructions

Coding or programming is just giving instructions to a computer, but the instructions need to be precise and in the correct order. Otherwise you will not get the desired result.

Play this game and see if you can give the correct instructions in the right order.
