1 - Introduction
Colours surround us every day, from the sky above to the clothes we wear. In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about them in French and share your favourites in a simple chat.
- Explore and listen to 12 French colour words.
- Learn key phrases like 'favourite' and 'why'.
- Test your listening with short conversations.
- Label images, hunt for words in a word search, and complete translations.
- Discuss your favourite colour using French vocabulary.
By the end, you'll know the French words for colours, understand basic questions about favourites, and be ready to chat about them.
2 - Listen and Explore
Let's review the words for the different colours in French, and add in some new colours to learn.
Take your time exploring the 12 items, listening as often as you like to get comfortable with how they sound. This will set you up nicely for chatting about favourite colours in French.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Word Table activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- A vocabulary reference table with pronunciation. Students can click to hear words spoken.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Go through the table together, practising pronunciation as a class. Have students repeat after the audio.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
3 - How to Say
Before the listening activity in the next step, learn these key words that will be in the conversation. Click the buttons to hear how they sound in French.

French nouns have a gender: they are either masculine or feminine. This affects the form of adjectives like préféré and préférée, which must agree in gender with the noun they describe. You'll learn more about this as you progress.
Use préféré with masculine nouns and préférée with feminine nouns. For example, 'ma couleur préférée' (since 'couleur' is feminine).
4 - Test Your Ear
Ready to put your listening skills to the test? In this activity, you'll hear short audio clips in French and answer multiple-choice or true/false questions based on what you hear. It's a great way to build your comprehension and confidence with everyday conversations.
How to Use This Activity:
Option 1: Students on Devices
- Students complete the Listen & Answer activity on their own laptop or tablet.
- Students listen to audio and answer comprehension questions. They can replay audio as needed.
- Walk around the room to monitor progress and assist students who need help.
Option 2: Teacher-Led (Whiteboard/Projector)
- Display the activity on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
- Play audio to the whole class, then discuss answers together. Replay tricky sections.
- Invite students up to interact with the board, or have them call out answers from their desks.
