In Spain, family is at the heart of everyday life. Spanish families are often close-knit and include not just parents and children, but also grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. People take great pride in spending time together, and it is common for extended family members to live nearby or even in the same home. The word for family, familia , reflects this strong bond.
One cherished tradition is the big Sunday lunch, known as comida familiar . The whole family gathers around the table for a long meal with several courses, such as paella or roast meat, followed by conversation and laughter. These lunches can last for hours and strengthen family ties across generations.
Grandparents, or abuelos , play a special role. They often help care for grandchildren and pass down stories and traditions. Respect for elders is a key value, and children learn early to greet them warmly with a kiss on both cheeks.
