Introduction to Coding

What is coding and what can we make with it?

1 - What is coding?

Coding or programming means giving a computer step by step instructions. Take a look at this video which explains what coding is and what we can make with it.

2 - Computers in your house

Can you name 3 things in your house that have computers in them and that you can give instructions to?

see some examples

Here are some examples of things in your house that have computers in them and that you can give instructions to:

  1. a TV - you give it instructions using the remote control
  2. a phone - you give it instructions by tapping on the screen
  3. a microwave - you give it instructions by pressing the buttons
  4. a games console - you give it instructions using the gamepad

3 - Program somebody

For this step you will need somebody to help you out. Ask an adult, brother, sister or a friend to help you.

Program them to walk around a chair
Place a chair in the middle of a room. Give the person the correct instructions to walk around the chair once.

For example, you instructions might be:

  1. Take 4 steps forward
  2. Turn right
  3. Take 2 steps forward
  4. Turn right
  5. Take 2 steps forward
  6. Turn right
  7. Take 2 steps forward

Program them to walk around a chair, pick something up and return it to you
Now put something on the chair, like a ball or a book. Give the person the correct instructions to walk around the chair once, pick up the object and bring it to you.

For example, you instructions might be:

  1. Take 4 steps forward
  2. Turn right
  3. Take 2 steps forward
  4. Turn right
  5. Take 2 steps forward
  6. Turn right
  7. Take 1 steps forward
  8. Pick up the book
  9. Turn the opposite direction
  10. Take 3 steps forward
  11. Give the book to me!
